Brockley vs Tuddenham
By Alex McCaffrey
Hill returns to collect 20 points for the Badgers
Brockley, sponsored by the superb A14 Tyres, welcomed Tuddenham to the Brockley Oval for the 3rd Legends Day on the windiest day in recent history.
Huffer won the toss and elected to bowl with Stu Hill (3-46) returning to the starting 11 hoping to have a gentle introduction back into village cricket. Unfortunately he was tossed the new ball and told to bowl 15 overs, thankfully his warm up was a 3000km trek along the Te Araroa trail some months earlier. Hill bowled with speed and accuracy, a rare combination for the Brockley 1st team as he quickly had the opener out caught McCaffrey. Brockley seemed to have not turned up for fielding practice that morning and ball after ball went through the fielders legs racing away to the boundary. Ward (53) and Cross R (42) rebuilt the Tuddenham innings
Walter-Smith bowled with accuracy and turn as he quickly continued his excellent form this season taking 5-46 from 12 as Brockley chipped away at the Tuddenham middle order. The fielders seemed to have got all the rubbish fielding out of their system by the 35th over making it harder for the batsman to smash the ball to the boundary. Walter-Smith took the 10th wicket with final ball of the 45th over, Tuddenham 200 all out.
Fisher & McCaffrey were hoping to achieve an opening partnership similar to the one during the away game to Tud however neither seemed to have switched their bat on as nothing came out the middle for the first 15 overs, McCaffrey (39) inside edging 4 4's much to the delight of the opening bowlers. He was finally out stumped trying to hit the ball over Hartest hill bringing Jones (39) to the crease who along with Fisher (67) took the score to 140. Both fell in the space of 20 runs leaving Skipper Huffer (3) and chief fielder Beeton smash the winning runs bringing home the 20 points for Brockley.
Special thanks to Tuddenham for sticking around after the game for a game of 5 a side football and to the large number of ex-players & club legends who came to watch the game. It's days like these where village cricket thrives
Tuddenham 200 Cross 53, Walter-Smith 5-56
