Brockley vs Abberton & District

By

A big little push ensures an on time arrival at Taylorfest

Brockley, generously sponsored by A14 Tyres, welcomed Abberton the the Oval for a mid- table challenge. On yet another baking hot day – and I don’t just mean Webby in the Kitchen – Brockley found themselves fielding. It wasn’t entirely clear whether this was a tactical decision on the part of Abberton or Huffer’s ongoing quest to have the best tanned team in the middle of the table.

Sykes (1 for 39) opened from one end and it was clear Brockley were relying on him. Which was odd as no-one wanted to catch his catches and aside from one ball that bounced oddly and hit offstump he created few problems. This allowed Abberton to confidently move to 46 for 1 after the first 10 overs.

At this point Firth The Younger (4 for 52) became “the reliable one” picking up 3 quick wickets with the help of catches from Jefferys and McCaffrey and Inspector Gadget Meekings who was using the club’s infallible right arm that had been lent to him by Ed Beeton. This had the innings poised nicely at 104 for 5 off 25 overs with Abberton showing that their batting, despite missing a number of players, had real depth.

The remaining 20 overs were a keenly fought affair with R Meekings, Beeton and captain Huffer turning in good performances that were ably supported by strong fielding tactics and contributions from all. However, Abberton are high up the table for a reason and still managed to close on 202 for 7.

In reply McCaffrey (84) protected the unusually subdued Fisher (32) from the attack and ensured the rate remained high with a range of powerful shots : 56 for 0 off 10 became 105 for 1 off 22 and as Jones took over from Fisher the Brockley score advanced quickly to 182 for 2. At this point normal service was resumed and wickets clattered once the prolific McCaffrey was dismissed.

At 200 for 6 there was even a sense that a true upset was on the cards (and we didn’t mean Georgia making a move on Alex – after all she is far too loyal for that) but with Dave Meekings and Sykes at the crease Brockley craped home and Ben Samira Jefferys was able to leave the ground early after all.

It should be noted that this was a highly competitive game played in a great spirit by both sides and the absence of League umpires made not a jot of a difference. Whilst Brockley made have triumphed on this occasion, Abberton showed enough to suggest that they are highly likely to be a Division Two side next season whilst Brockley will probably end in a typically mid table berth.

Brockley 206-6, McCaffrey 84, McKim 2-36
Abberton & District 202-7 Pettit 41*, Firth 4-49
Brockley win by 4 wickets
